If you're planning to use NeatWorks for expense reports, you'll find that the report formats in the program are limited. You can also export the data to a TurboTax file.Įxpense Reports, Business Cards, and Other Issues There's also a screen for tax reports that lets you print the information you need for taxes, including things like the detailed list and totals for the line items of various schedules you can add to your 1040 tax form. Each one also includes some information customized for the particular type of item-with contact information for business cards, for example, and vendor name for receipts. The three database screens-for receipts, business cards, and documents-are all similar to each other, with panes that show a table of individual items and the scanned image of the currently selected item. You can also add a tax category from a drop-down list, mark an item as a reimbursable expense, and add other information before sending the item to the appropriate database. After you've scanned an item, you can go to it in the Inbox, confirm that the program recognized the text properly, and correct anything that's wrong. This sends the document to the NeatWorks Inbox, which serves as a kind of holding area for newly scanned documents. To scan a document to the NeatWorks database you can use either of the Scan buttons. Use it with a desktop indexing and search program like Google Desktop, for example, and you'll be able to find files when you need them.

The Quick Scan Center lets you change scan settings easily and then start a scan, using either the PDF or Scan button on the scanner itself or the two equivalent buttons in the dialog box.Įither PDF button lets you scan a document to a Windows folder as a searchable PDF file, a feature that lets you use the scanner for document management independently of NeatWorks itself. This is thanks to two additional features: The Quick Scan Center and the Inbox. NeatWorks is similar to older versions with other names, but it's also notably easier to use. You can also buy software separately for the Mac or buy the Mac version of NeatReceipts, but both of those are separate products.

I installed the software on a system running Windows Vista, but according to The Neat Company, the disc also includes a full set of drivers and software for Vista 64-bit, Windows XP, and both 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 7. The installation routine installs NeatWorks plus Twain and WIA drivers, which between them will let you scan directly from most programs with a scan command.

Simply install the software using the automated installation routine on disc, then connect the scanner with the supplied USB cable (also white, to match the scanner), and let Windows recognize the hardware to finish the setup. The top of the scanner includes a status light plus two scan buttons, which I'll come back to a little later.

However, it looks a lot sleeker than a stack of rulers-or most portable scanners for that matter-thanks to its shiny white case with black highlights and nicely rounded edges and corners. It scans only one side, but you can, of course, scan both sides of a duplex page easily enough by turning the page over and feeding it through again.Īt 1.3 by 10.8 by 1.8 inches (HWD) and 10.6 ounces, the scanner's a little shorter than a stack of 1-foot rulers and doesn't weight much more. The manual feed slot can handle one page at a time-which in this context can mean anything from one receipt or business card to a document as large as 8.5 by 30 inches. The hardware side of NeatReceipts is a lightweight portable scanner with 600 pixel-per-inch (ppi) optical resolution, which is more than enough for scanning receipts or other documents. Note too that The Neat Company also sells a package called NeatDesk ($399.95 direct, ), which is the identical software but with a desktop scanner. Just to be clear: NeatWorks 4.0 was the first version of the software named NeatWorks, but it was the fourth major version of essentially the same software design. In any case, the version I reviewed included the most recent portable scanner (identified as model NM-1000 on a label hidden on the underside of the scanner) and the most recent version of the software, NeatWorks 4.8.
